Get Involved
Details of many activities and contacts are given in the Parish Newsletter and on the Notice Board in the church porch. If you require more information or wish to get involved in any of the parish activities please contact the Parish Priest at the presbytery.
Parish Social Centre
The Flannery Centre, as it is now called, lies adjacent to the church. It is comprised of a large hall with a wooden floor, a carpeted lounge and a kitchen. These facilities are available for Parish activities. It is also used by non-parish organisations.
Church Care
Sacristan
The sacristan attends to the preparation of the church and assists the Priest with the main services.
Consecrated Women
Our parish’s Consecrated Woman assists with the preparation of the church services as well as many other functions. She is also a trustee of the Diocese and a member of the Board of Education and Formation.
Cleaners
There are a number of volunteers on a rota who clean the church. As some people cannot commit themselves to a rota, there is now a list of "Bank Staff” who are willing to be asked to cover when someone is sick or on holiday. This is an important function in the parish and more people are always welcome to help spread the load. Additional volunteers help with laundering of the church linen.
Flowers
There are a number of people who carry out the decoration of the church with flowers each week and on special occasions.
Groundcare
Our beautiful garden is maintained and cared for by much valued volunteers.
Gift Aid and Offertory Envelopes
It would be a great help if every tax-paying parishioner signed a Gift Aid Declaration for their donations to the Offertory Collection. Whether an Offertory Collection Envelope or Cheque or Bankers Standing Order is used the parish can claim tax back from the Inland Revenue for every pound donated. If you wish to have a set of Offertory Envelopes or pay by Cheque or set up a Standing Order or sign a Gift Aid declaration please contact the presbytery.
Parish Activities
(some are still suspended at the moment - check the notice board)
Interim Parish Council
A group of volunteers initially led the parish response to the Bishop’s Fit For Mission proposals. Resulting from this the group have introduced a few new parish activities and now co-ordinate several others.
The Prayer of the Church
On weekdays we have the Prayer of the Church (Morning or Evening) fifteen minutes before the time for Mass. This consists of Psalms, Readings and Prayers. Everyone is welcome to join in this prayer. There is also Exposition of the Blessed Sacrement on Thursday mornings after the 10.30am Mass in Ulverston.
Catholic Women’s League
This is an international organisation with branches at parish, diocesan and national levels. We help with parish events, have invited speakers at our meetings and carry out fund-raising for charity and the parish. We also have Retreats, outings and have frequent contacts with ladies from other churches in the town. The group meets on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month in the parish Social Centre at 7:30 p.m. New members are always welcome.
St Vincent de Paul Society
The group meets once a month in the presbytery and makes collections at church for use for charitable purposes. Its main activities are visiting the sick or housebound and aiding homeless and others in financial distress.
Parish Gala
One of the highlights of each year is the Parish Gala in early Summer using St. Mary's School and its grounds. Volunteers to run stalls are always needed.
Prayer Groups
One group functions in our parish modelled on the New Start with Jesus format. The Gospel for the following Sunday is used as a basis for reflection and prayer. Meetings are held throughout the year especially during Advent and Lent. There is also a Lectio Divina group which meets once a week.
Music Group
The Music Group usually play at the Sunday morning Mass on the 3rd Sunday each month and at other special Masses during the year. We especially encourage young people to join this group
